You can make gout if you are overweight, if you drink alcohol or have high cholesterol. Men make gout more often than women. Women are more susceptible to gout after menopause.

What is gout?

You wake in the middle of the night and feel the thumb of the foot as they were on fire. Hot, swollen and shiny so that even the weight of a blanket on it seems intolerable. These problems may indicate an acute attack of gout – or gouty arthritis – a form of arthritis that is characterized by attacks of severe, sudden pain, redness and skin shiny in the joints.

Gout is a complex disorder that can affect anyone. Men are more prone to gout than women but women’s susceptibility to gout increases after menopause.
